As the new year and a new Horizon 2020 work programme kick off, the SME Instrument will have decoupled cut-off dates for Phase 1 and Phase 2. The first deadline of the year was for Phase 2 and EASME received a total of 553 proposals by 3 February 2016.

On the top of the list of topics ICT still collects the greatest number of proposals with 131 proposals, followed by low carbon energy systems (64), nanotechnology (60), and transport (55).
Spain and Italy compete for the first place of the top three countries in terms of number of proposals with 84 and 83 proposals each. The UK follows with 59 proposals. These figures are based on the nationality of the project coordinator, bearing in mind that one project can include participants from several countries. Most projects (83 %) were submitted by a single SME.
The next cut-off date for Phase 2 is 14 April 2016.
