Urban Heat Islands (UHI) are a common phenomenon in which urban areas are warmer than adjacent rural areas. As the climate continues to change and more people move into urban areas, the UHI effect becomes more pronounced, especially with regards to energy consumption and public health. TRB hosted a series of recordings in July 2020 that provided an overview of the UHI phenomenon. Presenters explored why cities and agencies are looking to reduce the UHI effect and what the current understanding of UHI is. They also quantified the impact of pavements on UHI.
