A transition in a safety barrier system is a short section between a more flexible system and a less flexible system to decrease the flexibility gradually along its length. At present there are various transition designs being used by road agencies.
This webinar describes the development, testing and evaluation of a proposed Australasian transition from a strong post public domain W-beam to a concrete barrier.
Presented by Rod Troutbeck, Daniel A. Naish and Jade Hogan.
There will be question and answer opportunities at the end of the session.
Dr Rod Troutbeck is a principal of Troutbeck & Associates. Dr Troutbeck has been a researcher at the Australian Road Research Board and a Professor of Civil Engineering at Queensland University of Technology before consulting. In 2000, Rod received an Australian Sports Medal for services to Motor Sport. He has also been awarded the Institution of Engineers Australia Transport Medal in 2008, the US Transportation Research Board Kenneth A. Stonex Roadside Safety Award in 2013, Emeritus Member status of the US Transportation Research Board committee for Roadside Safety Design in 2014 after being a member for over 20 years and co-chairman of the International Research sub-committee for 12 years. Rod has a number of publications on roadside safety dating from the early 1980s.
Dr Daniel Naish is a Manager at the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and leads a small group of civil engineers, town planners, corridor managers, designers, project managers, and administration officers. Daniel is a registered mechanical engineer with nearly 22 years of professional experience with a diverse career across different industry sectors ranging from engineering consulting to public service to academic lecturing. He completed a Graduate Certificate in Planning in 2005 and then obtained his PhD from Queensland University of Technology in 2013. He has completed numerous academic publications in fields such as road traffic noise, road safety barriers and vehicle crash dynamics. Using his specialist knowledge in road safety barrier standards, guidelines, products and design practice he has project managed a number of related research projects from concept stage through to finalisation.
Jade Hogan is a Manager at Transport for NSW. She leads a group of road designers to deliver feasibility and strategic assessment of road projects across Sydney. Jade is a civil engineer with 20 years of professional experience in the road design field. She has worked across both the public and private sector. Jade chairs the Austroads Safety Barrier Assessment Panel that assesses the crashworthiness and suitability of road safety barriers, systems and devices for deployment on roads managed by Australian/New Zealand Road Agencies.
No charge but registration is essential.
