How will driverless vehicles change mobility over the next decade? What will their impact be on the way America delivers a myriad of services, from emergency medical assistance to package delivery? How advanced is the technology today? And why is Google one of the world’s leaders in researching, designing and building autonomous vehicles? Chris Urmson, director of Google’s self-driving car program answered those questions during a keynote address at the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting, in Washington D.C. January 13, 2016. Urmson said Google’s primary motivation for creating driverless cars is to improve safety, mobility and reliability by reducing traffic crashes and the amount of time people waste sitting in traffic. Urmson also described the progress his team is making in rapidly advancing the technology. Watch excerpts from Urmson’s 30 minute speech in this, the first in a series of T-Talk videos on Transportation TV.
